The Story:
The film explores the impact of cluster headaches, a severe and debilitating neurological condition characterized by intense, recurring pain on one side of the head. It delves into the life of a couple coping with this condition, highlighting their struggles and resilience in the face of chronic suffering.
Lighting Vision
Chiaroscuro
For our film, we chose low-light settings with stark contrasts to enhance the drama, emphasize the body horror elements, and reflect our character's aversion to light. Inspired by films such as "Pi," "Tetsuo: The Iron Man," and "Apocalypse Now," we employ this style predominantly in the cluster room using hard lighting. In the kitchen scenes, we opt for softer lighting while still maintaining a dark ambiance.
How theme influenced visual decision
The central theme of the film revolves around the character's battle with cluster headaches, a debilitating neurological condition often referred to as "suicide headaches" due to the excruciating pain they cause. These headaches are characterized by sudden, intense bouts of pain, typically focused around one side of the head or behind the eye, and can last from minutes to hours. The intense bouts of pain are visually represented through lighting that peaks on and off, close-up shots of the character's face to reflect his inner struggle, and fast-cut editing to convey the overwhelming and chaotic nature of his experience. To enhance the impact of these peak moments, they are contrasted with the calmer, quieter moments of the movie, creating a stark difference that emphasizes the character’s turbulent journey.
