Inspired by the films ‘Cold War’ and ‘Ida’ by director Pawel Pawlikowski, our group recreated a bar scene, drawing from his signature black-and-white cinematographic style. While chiaroscuro is traditionally characterized by dramatic contrasts between light and shadow, sharp edges, and intense highlights, what sets Cold War apart for me is the subtle softness of its monochromatic imagery. The film balances contrast with a gentle gradation of tones, making everything; from the snow to the skin appear tactile and delicate. This nuanced approach to black-and-white cinematography was the guiding inspiration behind our own attempt to replicate this aesthetic.
